What is the Story Project?

The Story Project is an initiative by Rod & Staff Media created to offer thoughtful, professional documentary filmmaking to organizations and small businesses who are doing meaningful work but may not otherwise have access to sharing their story behind their business with the people they serve.

Through this project, we create short documentary films that help these organizations share who they are, why their work matters, and the people they serve. The films are designed to be genuinely useful — for websites, outreach, fundraising, or community connection — while remaining grounded in honesty rather than hype.

Each season, we set aside limited capacity for The Story Project and select a small number of participants. Every film is approached with the same care, craft, and attention we bring to our commissioned work. The difference is not the quality of the work, but where and why it is offered.

Who The Story Project Is For

The Story Project is designed for organizations and small businesses who are doing meaningful work and would benefit from having their story told clearly and honestly.

This initiative is a good fit for those who:

  • Are mission-driven or community-focused

  • Serve people, causes, or neighborhoods in a tangible way

  • Care about why their work exists, not just how it’s presented

  • Would meaningfully use a short documentary film to share their story

  • Are open to a thoughtful, collaborative storytelling process

The Story Project is especially intended for organizations and small businesses who may not otherwise pursue this kind of work due to cost or access, but who understand the value of being seen and understood clearly.

How The Story Project Works

The Story Project follows a simple, thoughtful process designed to respect both the work being shared and the people behind it.

1.  Apply

Organizations and small businesses begin by submitting a short application. This helps us understand your work, your story, and how a documentary film could serve you.

2. Review & Selection

Each season, we review applications and select a limited number of projects based on need, alignment, and capacity. Because space is limited, not every application can be accepted.

3.  Story & Production

If selected, we work together to plan and create a short documentary film. The process is collaborative and unhurried, centered on listening and honest storytelling.

4. Delivery & Use

Completed films are delivered for you to use in ways that best serve your organization — whether for outreach, fundraising, community engagement, or online presence.

Throughout the process, our goal is simple: to tell your story clearly, honestly, and with care.

Applying to The Story Project

If The Story Project feels like a good fit, you’re welcome to apply.

The application is brief and designed to help us understand your work, your needs, and how a documentary film could serve you. There is no expectation of polished language or marketing experience — honesty and clarity matter most.

Every application is read with care.

What To Expect
  • A short application focused on your work and story

  • A review process guided by need, alignment, and capacity

  • Clear communication once decisions are made

  • A respectful process, regardless of outcome

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis as capacity allows.
